Here are some excerpts from Fitness Connection ratings on Yelp:
"Firstly, I have been a member for over a year. During this year and a half, I
have encountered many issues, but each were handled. I will say, I have
encountered a few very unprofessional sales staff-rude, impolite, and they make
you feel as though you are an inconvenience. If you are in the customer service
and/or sales industry, this needs to change. Luckily, I just go to the gym for
work-outs and ignore the sales zombies as I walk in, so it doesn't bother me
unless I need help with something. Secondly, I have had complaints in regards to the poor shower conditions in the
women's locker room and the quality of the exercise machines. Yesterday, I
noticed that there are newer shower heads, etc in the women's locker room, and
most (if not all) of the old treadmills have been replaced with newer, better
"I am bummed that every time I've scheduled a free consultation with the trainer,
I get ditched. I've stopped asking for that now since I'm not going to get it
even though it was offered as a perk of my membership"
"I have also run afoul of Fitness Connection's harassing and illegal billing
practices. I provided written cancellation and 30 days notice, but they
continued to bill for the additional 14.99/month I had added to my membership so
my son could use the day care facility. They claimed that this was a
separate and additional membership (even though, like all gyms, minors aren't
allowed beyond the day care facility), and that the cancellation notice also had
to be given for that. Avoid these people at all cost--they will scam you
at every opportunity.
Update: I filed complaints with BBB, and NC
Attorney General Consumer Protection Division. Unfortunately, the way
these shysters avoid a really horrific rating on BBB is by listing their
business under the name of a shell holding company. So don't be fooled if
you see some good ratings on the BBB site under their current name. The
holding company is called "Titan Fitness" and is out of Texas."
Fitness Connection are Scammers!
"I was warned about Fitness Connection, but they were the closest gym to both my
wife's work and our apartment, so we went with them against our better
While the North Hills gym was generally clean and in good
repair, the other locations that I went to were dirty, crowded and hot.
The majority of the machines that I worked out on at the other locations
were past their prime at best and in bad shape at their worst.at the other
When I joined, I didn't want to pay the large upfront
enrollment fee, so we agreed to pay $29.99 per month each for both my wife and

When we gave our written 30 notice, they tried to say that
we had signed a one year agreement. I dug up my copy of the agreement and
it clearly stated that it was a month to month agreement. They backed down
at that point, but when the 30 days was up they still hit us for another month's
I called their corporate headquarters and was bounced around, but
finally told that our club had not sent in the cancellation notice and that I
would have to take it up with them. Upon further research I found out that
they had an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau with unresolved
complaints related to this exact issue!
Stay away from these folks...they are scammers"
"Initial sign up experience seems consistent with the other reviews. A good bit
of pressure to sign up immediately and my "free personal trainer eval" or
whatever was pretty short, 15mins, and when I declined the service, he was not
too happy and didn't hide it. I got over it.
Layout is not great as another reviewer mentioned. I'm sure they're limited by the design of the building, but it does feel cramped even when there aren't a lot of people there.
Equipment is decent, but often is broken and under repair. It may take a
week or so for a particular piece to be repaired from what I've noticed.
Attachments with rubber handles are torn or missing, ropes are frayed, pads are
ripped et al.
Locker/toilet/shower- not great. In fact, pretty gross. I understand there are a bunch of dudes using it and are often not careful or clean themselves appropriately. However, I go there early in the morning and it habitually reeks of mold, mildew and general body funk. I don't know how often it gets cleaned, but would appreciate it if it were more often. I go and shower because I don't have the time to back track home and then pass the gym again on the way to work. But if I could find a way to not use it, believe me I would."
Personal Trainer is Always on the Phone
" The only problem I have is with my PT--he is constantly on his phone talking or
texting. This half hour is MY TIME and I want his full attention! That's why I
gave FC 4 stars instead of 5. I'm paying $40 for the half hour of PT, and I want
it all. If I were to get another PT I would request a different one, and
preferrably a woman since I am a woman."
"Uhmmm. No. I understand that gyms are a hard business. But
with the prices they charge I do expect the equipment to work. Neither of
the spinning bikes worked. One of the step mills did not work. Most of the
free motion resistance cables were missing. I could not find 10 lbs.
plates to add to bench. The water fountain barely gets past the opening
(diseases people!). Oh did I mention dirty! I will find another place!"
Hassle in Canceling Membership
"My one-star rating is based on the hassle I am currently dealing with in
trying to cancel my membership after moving out of state. I was told by the desk
staff to send a certified letter requesting cancellation. I did so.
weeks later I started receiving calls and emails from Fitness Connection
customer support. After attempting to contact them at my convenience and being
hung up on by their crappy automated phone system (several times), I started
attempting to contact them during work. I finally got a rep on the phone,
explained my situation, and was told a few troubling things by the
1. The certified letter should have been sent to the customer
service center in Houston, TX. This is not what I was told by the staff at the
location I was enrolled at.
2. A cancellation request could not be
submitted by customer service since I do not have a zero balance. I do not have
a zero balance because I was charged for a month at a gym in a state I had left
almost two months before, and submitted my cancellation request over a month
Basically, Fitness Connection is trying to charge me for their mistakes. The first customer service rep I spoke to sent me to her voice mail after I requested a manager/supervisor. The second rep put me on hold when I made the same request, thirty seconds on hold then I was hung up on. I don't want to guess what's going to happen the next time I call."
Needs a lot of Work!
I used to go to the Fitness Connection in Pleasant Valley and complained,
but after visiting this one I regret a lot of what I said about Pleasant Valley
and can now say that I truly have been a member of a bad gym.
First of the facility needs some renovation. It looks like they spent all their
renovation money on the locker rooms an ran out when it was time to take care of
the rest of the gym. The towels are all gross and grey (although once
What irks me the most is the setup upstairs. Every gym I've ever
been to has a designated mat area for stretching, the weights and
equipment...well every gym except for this one. It looks like the just laid out
all of the equipment with no thought. People have to find awkward corners to do
their push ups, squats, or any other calisthenics.
Nothing about this place felt welcoming, to the point that I would stay home and work although I'm paying for the membership."
This place is by far an average gym. It's not a Gold's, Bally's or
O2 Fitness, so don't expect too much.
I joined here out of necessity. The sales staff has a high turnover. They will lie to you
and tell you whatever you want to hear and when you find out they lied, they
work elsewhere. They love to leave out info like "maintenance charges" and
other interesting things you should know when joining. The non-sales staff
are friendly and seem to stick around.
This gym offers 2 racquet ball courts, a basketball court, pool, sauna, stand-up tanning (extra), aerobic classes and personal trainers (extra). There are also outdoor tennis
courts and a jacuzzi (which is literally full of dirt).
The locker rooms are typical. Filthy and full of naked old men who feel the need to
roam around while you try to b-line it in/out of the head.Upstairs there's plenty of treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, machines & free weights.
The draw backs are as follows:
not a lot of equipment because there's not a lot of space upstairs. Get
used to waiting...
2. The dumb-bells only go up to 100 lbs.
This isn't a problem for most, but for more than you'd think.
There's only one squat rack. Get used to waiting while some noob
does curls on it, which is a cardinal sin.
4. People are pretty lazy and don't put stuff back where it belongs (typical)
Someone on here mentioned that their towels are old and grey. I don't use and gym's towels
as a rule since there's no telling where they've been and if/how they were cleaned.
Overall... It's average. Fitness Connection will be bought out in a year or two and then someone else will try to take your money before filing for bankruptcy. Lol!"
DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM!
"Do NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT! Join this gym was a member and maybe still is for
2 yrs. now and I had to move out of town due to a job I turned in a notice in
MAy and they still are billing me and I then changed my bank info so they
couldn't now getting harassed by there company's billing office in Webster Texas
saying I owe them and if I don't pay I will be getting charged my current fees
plus additional $20.00 every month I don't pay them. never knew joining
them would be like a gang membership in it for life! wtf??????"
"Not good. Unless you have no other choices due to location constraints, I'd
recommend you find a different place. A bunch of friends and me signed up
cause this was the closest gym with racquetball courts to our office. Allowing
us to catch afternoon games on weekdays.
Eventually we all ended up quitting :
-The courts (2 of them) themselves were in pretty poor condition.
-They had like 5 different plans which were super confusing, but
all seemed to add up to the same amount over the year. Felt other Gyms had
better deals or were just plain cheaper.
-Occasionally when I used the treadmills/ellipticals they were in pretty bad shape.
-In general the gym never looked/felt that clean.
-I never swam in the indoor pool that they had, but it didnt really look too clean and was rather small anyway :("
AGAIN, Billing issues...
"Do not join this gym. the staff and management are completely
incompetent. i joined, with the explanation that i am in the military and
would need to cancel my membership early. the staff member (marcus)
informed me that it would not be a problem. to make a long story short, i
had to send in proof of cancellation twice, once back in june of 2012, and a
second time in august, 2012. i recently received a phone call from a
collection agency saying that i owe $450.00. i have been in contact with
the rtp location, as well as the corporate office, and nobody appears to be
competent enough to resolve the issue. there are way better gyms in the
area, i would highly recommend another gym."
Hole in the Wall!
"I use to visit the Raleigh Location in Pleasant Valley. I left a
while ago when they switched to fitness connections and wouldn't bring me from
paying $40 a month to their $10 a month at the door new membership. It
took some time, but I decided to give the RTP one a shot since it was near my
house. I remember when walking through the place, they kept telling me
about all the upgrades, and new equipment that was coming. It actually got
me thinking, that new ownership may be spending some money here, and it would be
worth it. I signed on and have been here for about a month now. The
place is packed, so you know their making money. Well sadly to say, every
machine I see vacant doesn't work. There are a lot of machines that
constantly don't work. It's very frustrating to pay money, want to work
out and have such a lazy gym. The staff is really not that accommodating
either. I remember when customer service at gyms was top notch; they
wanted their business and offered a superior product. Now it's a hole in
the wall, and they brush you off as they did me several times when I had a few
questions. If something else pops into RTP and makes splash, this place
may vanish. Otherwise, maybe they will turn it around. For now, they
are low on my ratings, which is tough."
Poor Customer Service
"I was a member of fitness connection for 8 months. I had multiple
billing issues and incorrect charges. My trainer abruptly quit. They
have multiple staffing issues. Byron tried to convince me to sign up for
training for 12 months. He tried to trick me into signing and kept making
all of these verbal commitments and eventually was upset because i would not.
It was unprofessional and inappropriate. Poor customer service.
Some of the gym equipment was not in good condition. I would not
recommend this gym to anyone. Please be careful!"
